MARLANT Crest

Welcome to Maritime Forces Atlantic, also known as MARLANT. Matitime Forces Atlantic is headquartered in HMC Dockyard Halifax and is one of three main formations within the Canadian Navy.

In its simplest form, MARLANT comprises HMC Dockyard, CFB Stadacona, the CF Station at St. John's, Nfld and the Navy's Atlantic Fleet of ships. Among the key facilities located in HMC Dockyard are MARLANT headquarters, the headquarters of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, the Formation Supply facility and Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott. The CF Naval Engineering School, the CF Naval Operations School, the base hospital, the CF Warfare Centre and the messes are located in CFB Stadacona.

Comprised of more than 5,000 military personnel, 2,000 civilians and a fleet of 18 ships and submarines, MARLANT is the single largest employer in the Halifax Area. The Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic is responsible to the Chief of the Maritime Staff in Ottawa for generating ships and sailors as well as command and control capabilities for Domestic and international missions. Indeed, the ability to operate in conjunction with agencies such as the RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, Canada Revenue Agency, municipal and provincial governments as well as other elements of the Canadian Forces and foreign militaries is an increasingly important component of MARLANT’s operations. The people of the MARLANT community ensure that the Commander is able to fulfil his responsibilities, which include the following:

  • Command of the Canadian Navy's Atlantic Fleet.
  • Maintaining a naval task group that can respond to crises or events that might affect Canadian interests.
  • Supporting other government departments and agencies through assistance to law enforcement, fisheries protection, counter-drug operations and environmental monitoring.
  • Command of the Halifax Search and Rescue Region, which handles more than 2,400 marine, land and air emergencies annually, in an area covering more than 4.8 million square kilometres.
  • Supporting the 14,000 youth that are members of the sea, air and army cadets in the four Atlantic provinces.
